The idea behind it

Filson says its Rugged Twill Duffle Bags embody the philosophy that has guided the company since 1897, making products that are handed down rather than tossed out. That sets the tone. This is not a lightweight travel bag designed for one season. It is meant to be used hard and kept for a long time.

Rugged Twill

The bag is made from Rugged Twill, which Filson describes as an industrial strength canvas from Britain's most storied mills. It is lightly waxed for water resistance. Leather that wraps under the bag

The handles are made from Bridle Leather that Filson says is strong enough for horse tack. More importantly, the leather wraps completely under the bag to cradle the heaviest loads.

On the Large version, Filson specifies Bridle Leather from Wickett & Craig for both the handles and the removable shoulder strap.

Zipper and hardware

Both sizes close with a solid brass YKK zipper. Filson says the brass is rustproof for a lifetime of dependable service. The Small uses custom sand cast brass hardware, and on the Large, the zipper is protected by a snap secured storm flap.

Inside

Filson binds the interior seams of the Small with Tin Cloth canvas to prevent fraying and wear. Each interior end cap has a stow pocket for smaller essentials, and the Large also has interior end cap pockets for organization. That is a simple, practical layout: a big main compartment for clothes or gear, with a place at each end for small items like a charger, a toiletry kit or a pair of gloves.

Small or Large

The Small Rugged Twill Duffle is the more versatile of the two for most people. It works as a gym bag, an overnight bag or a weekend bag for light packers. Its Bridle Leather shoulder strap is detachable, so you can carry it by hand.

The Large Rugged Twill Duffle is sized, in Filson's words, for long excursions, and is built tough enough for the most extreme conditions. It is the better pick for hunting trips, long road trips or any time you are packing bulky layers. Its storm flap over the zipper is a detail the Small does not list.
