Bad Brains Are You Ready is finally real. On Friday, November 6, Trust Records puts out Are You Ready: The First Studio Recording (Inner Ear, March 1979), the earliest known studio session by the Washington, D.C. band that rewired punk. For almost five decades these six songs lived on dubbed tapes passed hand to hand. Now Ian MacKaye has mixed them properly, in cooperation with the band, and the most limited version is already gone.

An hour at Inner Ear that became a legend

The session went down in March 1979 at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, and it was captured in a single frantic hour. What came out was a blueprint. The tape includes the first studio recording of Pay to Cum, the song that would become a hardcore standard. The rest of side A is Jammin' at the Atlantis, Don't Bother Me, Black Dots, Migraine and Send No Flowers.

MacKaye mixed the recordings back at Inner Ear in 2026, and Pete Lyman mastered them at Infrasonic. If his name on an archival dig sounds familiar, it should. He and Henry Rollins did the same kind of rescue on The Cramps' Gravest Gravy, and D.C. punk fans will remember how deliberate that scene was about everything, right down to Fugazi's shoes.

Pay To Cum from Are You Ready, the official video from Trust Records, set to footage Barry Masterson shot of the band at CBGB on October 24, 1979.

The formats, and what is left

  • No Flowers Edition long-playing record (LP): clear vinyl with a neon green and pink center, a hand-numbered 11 by 11 inch risograph print, and only 250 copies. It is listed as sold out on the Trust Records store, so this one now lives on the secondhand market.
  • Second pressing, Transparent Black LP: the standard version, open now as a presale. Trust Records says it begins shipping December 18, so this is a holiday gift rather than a release day record.
  • Second pressing, Black Dot Edition LP: clear vinyl with an opaque black dot in the center. Same December 18 ship date.
  • Split cassette: a Trust Records and Bad Brains exclusive in a black and white shell with metallic ink, with the full album on both sides. It is still available and ships November 6, which makes it the fastest way to own this on release week.

Every LP is cut at 45 revolutions per minute (RPM) on a 12-inch disc with a B-side etching of artwork by bassist Darryl Jenifer. Inside is a double-sided insert of rarely seen images from the band's archive and liner notes by Alec MacKaye, with design by Kill Your Idols Studio. The same LPs and the cassette are also listed on the official Bad Brains store.

Hear it from the source in D.C.

The night before release, the DC Punk Archive and Trust Records host An Evening With Darryl Jenifer and Ian MacKaye at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library on Thursday, November 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Eastern. It is a conversation and listening event about the session and the band's D.C. years. Registration is required, seating is first come, first served, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided.

Our call

This is the rare archival release that earns the word essential. It is the moment Bad Brains first hit tape, and the new mix finally lets you hear it clearly. Grab the cassette if you want it this week, and lock in the second pressing LP before that sells through too. Release day is also Bandcamp Friday, so it is a good day to spend record money, and our gifts for vinyl collectors guide covers the rest of the list.
