Flower Face has a new album on the way. Kill The Muse is the next record from Ruby McKinnon, the Montreal singer and songwriter who records as Flower Face, and her official store lists it shipping on February 5, 2027. The first look arrived this week with Better The Devil, and it lands right on time for the colder months.

Better The Devil by Flower Face, the official visualizer from her YouTube channel.

Better The Devil

The song opens with an old flame back in town and a winter that will not let up. From there it turns into a portrait of the moment when your friends all seem to be moving on, getting sober and making plans, while you would rather stay in. The narrator promises to show up, knows she will not, and reaches for the familiar thing even though it is bad for her. That is the old proverb in the title, turned into a quiet confession.

What makes it hit is the restraint. McKinnon does not dress the feeling up or offer a tidy lesson at the end. She lets the contradiction sit there, which is exactly how this kind of loneliness feels. Put it on during a dark late afternoon and it makes complete sense.

The credits on the official upload say the song was written and performed by Flower Face, produced by Marcus Paquin and mastered by João Carvalho. The visualizer was directed by Hayley Lim and JF Sauvé, with Derek Branscombe on camera and handling the colour.

The cover

The artwork matches the mood. A woman lies across a pink bed with her legs up the wall, a lamp glowing beside her. It is soft and a little stuck, the picture of an afternoon that has gone on too long. Read it next to the album title and you get a clear sense of where this record lives: somewhere between rest and restlessness.

Kill The Muse tracklist

The official store lists eleven songs.

  1. Paralyzed
  2. Too Sweet To Swallow
  3. Videotape
  4. Sunsick
  5. Simon Says
  6. Party Trick
  7. Life's So Boring
  8. Better The Devil
  9. Bad Dream
  10. Something I Can Never Have
  11. Mortal Creature

Fans of nineties industrial records will spot Something I Can Never Have at number ten, a title that carries a lot of weight on its own. Hearing it in her hushed register should be one of the moments to wait for.

Formats and preorders

The store has the LP on limited edition purple vinyl and a CD, and the Better The Devil streaming page collects every service in one place. Limited colour pressings tend to go first, so if the purple copy is the one you want, it is worth sorting early.

For the backstory, the Nettwerk artist page covers her previous album, Girl Prometheus, an eleven song record about surviving and coming back. The Flower Face site is the place to watch for dates.

Why it matters

This one is Surfacing. Flower Face writes the kind of songs that feel private the first time you hear them, and Better The Devil is one of her most direct yet. With a February date and a full tracklist already out, Kill The Muse is a clear early pick for the first stretch of 2027. While you wait, catch up on Marika Hackman's False Dogs, another songwriter getting very honest on record, and the new Tindersticks album Dog Roses, which shares that slow, late night pull.
