Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster have released their fourth eyewear collaboration, and this time the idea is to break the glasses on purpose. Built around one word, deconstruction, the Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster 2026 collection is full of frames that look crushed, stretched or stopped halfway through being made. It went on sale on October 29 at 11 AM Eastern on the Gentle Monster site and in its stores.
Eyewear, unfinished
Gentle Monster describes the collection as an aesthetic of the unfinished. Some styles look as if they were frozen midway through fabrication or taken apart on the bench, while others go the opposite way and grow into oversized frames that wrap the face like a mask. The brand says the big shapes hide the face from other people while widening the wearer's own field of vision.
On its side, Maison Margiela calls this the next chapter of a partnership that started in 2023. Its pitch adds a second idea it calls Second Skin, where familiar shapes like an oval or a cat-eye frame are wrapped in leather. Every piece carries the house signature, its signature four white stitches, here placed at the temples.
The frames to know
The hero piece is the MM301, a thin silver oval frame that looks like someone sat on it. It is also the strangest listing in the drop. Gentle Monster's product page calls it a fashion styling product meant for short-term wear during photography only, and says plainly that it is not glasses or sunglasses of any kind, with lenses that cannot be swapped for prescription ones. In other words, it is a wearable sculpture, and that is the most Margiela thing about the whole range.
For something you can actually wear outside, the MM323 is a big aviator in tortoise acetate with brown lenses, and the MM305 Leather is a black cat-eye that brings the Second Skin idea to life. Square styles like the MM316 are the quieter way in. The sunglasses block 99.9 percent of ultraviolet (UV) rays, according to the product pages, and many styles can take prescription lenses.
Gentle Monster's launch announcement counts 68 styles in total, 43 sunglasses and 25 optical frames. Current official pricing for every style is listed on the Gentle Monster US store. Product pages also mark the collection as members only, so expect to sign in to a Gentle Monster account before you check out.
Already moving
A day after launch, a long list of colorways on the US store already reads To be restocked, including the crushed MM324 sunglasses and both versions of the MM302. If a shape speaks to you, the store offers a notify option on sold out pages.
The film and the pop-ups
The campaign is a short film by the artist Alex Prager. It follows one woman dashing across a city who keeps getting slowed down by a cast of strange characters, each wearing a different pair. Gentle Monster frames it as a story about deconstruction as a starting point rather than an end.
To mark the launch, pop-up spaces have opened in eight cities: Seoul at Haus Nowhere Seoul, Tokyo at Gentle Monster Aoyama, Shanghai at Haus Nowhere Shanghai, Beijing at Taikoo Li Sanlitun, Bangkok at Haus Nowhere Bangkok in ICONSIAM, Kuala Lumpur at The Exchange TRX, Melbourne at Chadstone and Paris in the Marais. There is no US pop-up on the list, so for American buyers the official story page and the online store are the way in.
Our call
This one is Surfacing. Four collaborations in, Margiela and Gentle Monster have stopped making nice sunglasses with a famous name on them and started making objects that argue with what eyewear is supposed to be. Not every frame needs to be crushed to be interesting, though.
