Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means one thing: movie night. If you want a ranked list of the genre's all-time greats, we already did that in The 25 Best Horror Movies of All Time, Ranked. This guide is different. It is a practical plan for October 31, sorted by who is on the couch and how scared they want to be, with where each film is streaming.

A quick note on availability. We checked every title against the streamer's own official page on October 30. Streaming libraries change without warning, so treat each "where to watch" line as accurate as of October 30, 2026, in the US, and double check before the popcorn goes in.

Our top pick this Halloween: The Cycle (2026)

The film's official site describes it simply: "A daughter unravels her father's dark past after his body, missing for 36 years, is found at a horrific crime scene." Jordan Downey directs, with Deborah Ann Woll, Jeffrey Donovan and Will Hochman in the cast. It is the newest film on this list and the one we keep coming back to. A slow-burn mystery that turns properly frightening, it is the pick for the grown-ups once the kids are in bed. We covered it in more detail in our first look at The Cycle.

Where to watch: streaming on Shudder as of Oct 30, per the official site.

Family-friendly: for the kids and the kids at heart

Hocus Pocus

Disney+ lists it as a 1993 film from director Kenny Ortega, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as three 300-year-old Salem witches conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters. It is loud, silly and built for a living room full of costumes. Start the night here.

Where to watch: streaming on Disney+ as of Oct 30.

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing-Along

Directed by Henry Selick, per Disney+, and the sing-along cut puts the lyrics on screen. Perfect for a crowd that already knows every word of This Is Halloween, and for the kids who are about to.

Where to watch: streaming on Disney+ as of Oct 30.

Coraline

Another Henry Selick film, per Hulu. A girl finds a door to a better version of her life, and it is not better at all. It is the right amount of creepy for older kids and a gorgeous piece of stop-motion for everyone else.

Where to watch: streaming on Hulu as of Oct 30.

The Addams Family

Paramount+ sums it up well: long-lost Uncle Fester, played by Christopher Lloyd, reappears after 25 years in the Bermuda Triangle, with Raul Julia as Gomez and Anjelica Huston as Morticia. Dark jokes, zero real scares, and the whole family can quote it by the end.

Where to watch: streaming on Paramount+ as of Oct 30.

Cozy and fun classics

Beetlejuice (1988)

Tim Burton's 1988 film, per HBO Max: a newly dead couple summons a bio-exorcist to evict the obnoxious new owners of their house. It is the ideal bridge between the family block and the grown-up block. Funny first, spooky second.

Where to watch: streaming on HBO Max as of Oct 30.

Trick 'r Treat (2009)

Michael Dougherty's 2009 anthology, per HBO Max, weaves four tales of terror together in one small town on Halloween night. If you only watch one movie that is actually about Halloween, make it this one. It plays the holiday's rules like a game.

Where to watch: streaming on HBO Max as of Oct 30.

Real scares: adults only

Hereditary

Directed by Ari Aster, per Hulu. A family grief story that turns into something much worse, one slow reveal at a time. This is the one that ruins the mood in the best way. Do not watch it with anyone who wants to sleep tonight.

Where to watch: streaming on Hulu as of Oct 30.

Bring Her Back (2025)

From Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, the directors of Talk to Me, per HBO Max. A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother. It is relentless, and it earns every gasp.

Where to watch: streaming on HBO Max as of Oct 30.

New horror from 2025

Weapons (2025)

Zach Cregger writes and directs, per Warner Bros. When all but one child from the same class vanish on the same night at 2:17 a.m., a town is left asking who, or what, is behind it. Josh Brolin and Julia Garner lead. It is the best recent pick for a group that likes a mystery with its scares.

The official Weapons trailer from Warner Bros.

Where to watch: streaming on HBO Max as of Oct 30.

Sinners (2025)

Ryan Coogler's 2025 film, per HBO Max. It is horror with blues in its blood and a period setting, and it plays as much like an epic as a scare machine. Pick it when the room wants something big.

Where to watch: streaming on HBO Max as of Oct 30, including a version with Black American Sign Language interpretation.

28 Years Later (2025)

Netflix lists it as a 2025 horror film with Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. Nearly 30 years after the rage virus, a boy and his father leave their island for a hunting trip on the mainland. Bleak, beautiful and fast.

Where to watch: streaming on Netflix as of Oct 30.

The late-night double feature

When the trick-or-treaters are done and the porch light is off, Shudder has the move. Its Halloween night "Trick or Treat" watch party pairs Halloween (1978) with Late Night with the Devil, followed by Deadstream, per Shudder's Season of Screams lineup. The pairing is perfect: the original masked-killer classic, then a film built around a cursed live TV broadcast on Halloween. Watch them together and the house will feel very quiet afterward.

Where to watch: on Shudder's live Shudder TV feed on Oct 31.

How to plan the night

Go light to dark. Open with Hocus Pocus or The Addams Family while the doorbell is still ringing, slide into Beetlejuice or Trick 'r Treat once the kids are fading, then let the adults choose between Weapons and Hereditary. Save the Shudder double feature for after midnight.
