Here is the horror pick nobody in your group chat has heard of yet. The Cycle is a Shudder Original from Jordan Downey, it premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin last month, and it lands on Shudder on Friday, October 23, just in time to be the movie you put on the week before Halloween and then talk about the week after. The official trailer is out, and it gives away almost nothing, which is exactly how it should be.
What it is
The premise, from Shudder's own announcement: police discover a corpse beside a horrific crime scene, and their only lead is the man's estranged daughter, who has to unravel the disturbing secret her father thought he took to the grave. Shudder's trailer description adds the hook that makes it stick: the father had been missing for 36 years before his body turned up.
That is a cold case and a family drama folded into one, with whatever the trailer is hiding waiting underneath, and Deborah Ann Woll is the right person to carry it. From Karen Page in Daredevil onward, she has made a career of playing people who keep digging after everyone else has stopped. Jeffrey Donovan co-stars.
Who made it
Downey is the reason to pay attention. His 2018 film The Head Hunter, made with his longtime collaborator Kevin Stewart, was a small, nearly wordless monster movie that got a lot of mileage out of very little, and it won a devoted following among horror fans who like their scares handmade. Before that he made ThanksKilling, the micro budget killer turkey comedy that horror fans still pass around every November. The Cycle is his biggest canvas yet, written with Stewart again, and it is the kind of step up that tends to produce something either very good or very strange. Both are fine by us.
Why it matters
Shudder has quietly become one of the best places to find horror that would never survive a wide theatrical release, the slow, odd, specific stuff that does not test well and does not need to. The Cycle is one of the new films in the service's annual Season of Screams, and the same October slate from Shudder's parent company brings Night Nurse, another under the radar title we flagged, to Sundance Now on October 16. If your horror taste was shaped by the A24 run in our starter guide, this is where a lot of the next wave is hiding.
It also matters because it is rare. A genre debut from a festival lineup usually gets lost between the big studio Halloween releases. This one has a date, a service, a trailer and a director with a following, and it is a single click away for anyone with a subscription.
How to watch
The Cycle premieres exclusively on Shudder on Friday, October 23, 2026. Shudder lists it in its October premiere schedule. Dates outside the US can differ, so check your local Shudder listing. It is on our Incoming radar for October, and it is our pick for the last Friday before Halloween.
