Ten years on, Lost Themes II gets the anniversary treatment it earned. Sacred Bones Records is shipping an expanded art edition of John Carpenter's second album of non-soundtrack compositions on October 30, 2026, with newly commissioned artwork by Randy Ortiz and a bonus 7-inch that finally puts "Real Xeno" on wide vinyl.
What the expanded edition adds
The original 2016 album is paired with a bonus 7-inch. Side A is "Real Xeno", once limited to the Sacred Bones Society, now available outside that club for the first time. Side B carries an exclusive etched design made for this run. That is a real catalog upgrade, not just a new sticker on an old jacket.
Vinyl variants on the Sacred Bones shop include Exclusive Blue and Magenta Plasma and Limited Edition Violet Sunrise. Street date tags on the product page point at October 30, 2026, and the Bandcamp embed on the label page is live for preview listens ahead of the ship date. Catalog number SBR385 keeps the release aligned with the rest of the Lost Themes series on the label.
Stock counters on the product page were still healthy when we checked, but anniversary colorways tend to move once collectors notice the bonus disc. If you want Plasma or Violet Sunrise specifically, the Sacred Bones shop is the place to watch, not a reseller screenshot.
Why Lost Themes still matters
Free of picture locks and cue sheets, the Lost Themes series let Carpenter, with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, write suspense for films that never existed. The first album proved the idea. Lost Themes II widened that world with richer arrangements and electric and acoustic guitars alongside the minimal synth pulse that made the debut feel like a midnight drive.
A decade later, Sacred Bones is treating the second album as a catalog landmark. Randy Ortiz's new art gives the anniversary a fresh face, and the bonus 7-inch gives collectors a reason to replace a worn first press instead of just flipping the old one. The label copy calls the series one of the defining chapters of Carpenter's career beyond film scores, and the expanded edition is built to argue that point on the shelf.
Our call
This one is Surfacing. Anniversary editions can feel like filler. This one adds a real track, new art, and colorways that match the mood of the music. If you already live in Carpenter's synth world, October 30 is the day to upgrade the shelf copy.
