Beck's Ride Lonesome has been out since September 18 on Capitol Records, and it is the record a lot of longtime fans have been asking for. It is his first collection of all-new material since Hyperspace in 2019, and it goes back to the slow, wide-open sound of Sea Change and Morning Phase, with many of the same players in the room. Now the story has a second chapter: on October 15, U2 named Beck as the support act for the Latin American dates of its 2027 world tour.
The band from Sea Change is back
For Ride Lonesome, Beck reunited the musicians from his original touring and recording band, the group he made Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations with: Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner. They cut the songs in Room B at United Studios in Hollywood, which Beck calls his favorite studio. Beck produced the album, and Nigel Godrich, who worked on Sea Change and Mutations, mixed every song.
Beck's own description of the sessions sums up the appeal. "While we were revisiting a musical and physical place," he said in the album announcement, "it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way." He added that it had been a decade since the band recorded Morning Phase, and that the playing and chemistry had "evolved and deepened."
The songs and the videos
The album runs 12 tracks and about 47 and a half minutes, opening with the title track and closing with "Beyond The Light." The full running order is Ride Lonesome, Run Away, In The Night, Failed Words, Bleed, Disappearing Act, For Your Love, Slow Canyon, It Ends Right Here, Falling Through My Hands, If You Don't Know What Love Is and Beyond The Light.
The title song came first, then "In The Night" arrived with the album announcement in July. Its video, directed by Mikai Karl and produced by Ryan Smale, stars the French actor Denis Lavant, known for Beau Travail and Mauvais Sang. "Disappearing Act" was also shared as a standalone track before the album landed. On release day, Mikai Karl returned to direct a video for "Run Away" starring Tadanobu Asano, set against a Tokyo cityscape.
