The Godzilla Minus Zero King Ghidorah trailer chatter has taken over the weekend, and Toho is not helping anyone calm down. The new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero dropped Sunday, October 11, right after its debut at the film's New York Comic Con panel, and it is a full sprint toward the end of the world. Takashi Yamazaki, the Academy Award winning director of Godzilla Minus One, is back as director, screenwriter and visual effects lead, and the countdown is now under four weeks.

What the trailer shows, and what it hides

Toho's own description of the trailer opens on Dr. Ogata, played by Jun Kunimura, saying a patient "had no business surviving." From there humanity is pushed into a corner with nowhere left to run, Akiko offers a small prayer in the chaos, and Godzilla lets loose a pale blue heat ray. What Toho does not do is name a second monster. That is where the King Ghidorah theory lives. The first theatrical poster, in the studio's own words, puts Godzilla inside mysterious blue energy with bright gold light beams striking from above, and fans have been reading that gold as Ghidorah's signature lightning ever since. Toho has not confirmed it, so treat it as the best rumor in kaiju right now, not a spoiler.

The story is official, though. The film picks up in 1949, two years after Godzilla Minus One, and follows the Shikishima family again, with Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe returning as Koichi and Noriko. Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki are back too, while Min Tanaka joins as a war-scarred biologist and Masami Nagasawa plays a genius weather forecaster at the Disaster Response Bureau. The tagline says it all: "There is no third time. Everything ends here."

Dates and tickets

  • November 3: Godzilla Day IMAX Early Access screenings nationwide in the United States, the same day the film opens in Japan.
  • November 6: wide release from GKIDS in standard formats, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, D-BOX and other premium large formats.

If you only see it once, make it IMAX. Theaters are also stocking limited Godzilla Minus Zero concessions at nearly 3,000 locations in the United States and Canada, led by a full-figure Godzilla popcorn bucket, while supplies last.
