Meze Audio just put the POET Jazz Special Edition on sale, and it is the kind of drop that does not wait around. The Romanian headphone maker took its compact planar-magnetic POET and handed eleven pairs over to be painted by hand, one pair for each mood of jazz. Every pair exists once. The POET Jazz Special Edition went live on Meze's own store on October 21, and by midday Eastern Time five of the eleven were already marked sold out.
What the Jazz Special Edition is
Meze describes the series as eleven singular objects rather than a limited run. Each pair explores a specific emotional state of jazz through gesture, color and layering, and the brand says the painting is meant to be a visual extension of listening, not decoration. Only the cups, the bracket and the slider get the artistic treatment, so the rest of the headphone keeps its machined look. That contrast is the point: Meze calls POET a study in precision and restraint, and the paint brings in the unpredictable part, built up like a live performance where the final result cannot be fully planned.
Once a pair sells, it is gone for good. Meze says none of them will be reproduced, replicated or reissued, and the series closes when the last pair finds its owner.
The eleven pairs
Each one is named for a moment in a jazz set, and the names alone make a decent playlist prompt:
- Blue Note, built around the melancholy only jazz can hold without resolving it
- Swing State, for the moment rhythm starts to flow
- Bebop Static, energy compressed into fast lines and held tension
- Midnight Session, the hour when technique disappears
- First Take, few gestures, decisive ones
- Brass and Smoke, warm and dense, a club at full capacity
- Free Form, where each gesture decides the next
- Low End, double bass, space and breath
- Offbeat, unexpected accents and broken rhythm
- Afterglow, the echo after the last chord
- Encore, the one more thing worth saying
When we checked Meze's store around noon Eastern Time, Midnight Session, First Take, Free Form, Offbeat and Afterglow were sold out, while Blue Note, Swing State, Bebop Static, Brass and Smoke, Low End and Encore still showed a single unit each. Check the product page for what is left before you get attached to a favorite.
Why POET is a good canvas
Under the paint, this is the regular POET, which Meze introduced in 2025 as a more compact open-back planar-magnetic headphone borrowing the driver technology of its flagship ELITE. It uses the MZ6 Isodynamic Hybrid Array driver developed for Meze by Rinaro Isodynamics, with a very light Parus diaphragm, a magnesium chassis, a steel grill, a flexible titanium alloy headband, magnetic ear pads and a hand-braided copper cable. Meze also says every part is serviceable. The standard model picked up the Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) award for Best Premium Headphones, which Meze covered on its news page, and the regular version is still on the POET product page if a one-off is not your thing.
Our call
This is a collector piece first and a headphone second, and that is fine because the headphone underneath is excellent. If one of the remaining pairs speaks to you, Blue Note and Low End are the ones we would chase, and the window is clearly short. If you want to know what to play on it, our Blue Note Records starter guide is the obvious first stop. For the rest of the chain, our best portable digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and headphone amps picks will help, and if you would rather hear jazz on a big system with strangers, see our guide to finding a real listening bar.
