The Housemaid HBO Max success story is the thing everyone is searching this week, and it makes sense. Paul Feig's twisty, R rated adaptation of Freida McFadden's runaway thriller started streaming on HBO Max in the United States on Friday, October 9, and a whole new wave of viewers is finishing it and immediately asking the same question: what happens next? The good news is that the answer is already sitting on a bookshelf, three novels and a short story deep.
What you are watching
Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, a woman trying to escape her past who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. Amanda Seyfried is Nina, Brandon Sklenar is Andrew, and Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins and Indiana Elle round out the cast. In HBO Max's own words, what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal and power. Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay, and McFadden, Sweeney and Seyfried are all among the producers. It runs 2 hours and 12 minutes and first hit theaters on December 19, 2025, so if you skipped it on the big screen, this is the easy way in.
Twist-heavy storytelling is McFadden's signature, which is exactly why so many viewers are heading straight for the novels afterward. McFadden, a practicing physician who specializes in brain injury, has a gift for the late reveal that makes you want to flip back and reread every chapter.
The Housemaid books in order
McFadden's official book list lays out the series like this:
- The Housemaid (Book 1). The story you just watched, first published in 2022. The Grand Central Publishing paperback carries the line "over three million copies sold," and it reads in a weekend. Grab The Housemaid paperback.
- The Housemaid's Secret (Book 2). Millie is cleaning a stunning city penthouse for the Garricks, and she still has not met Mrs. Garrick or seen inside the guest bedroom. It is also the next movie, and the cast already includes Paul Anthony Kelly as Douglas. Pick up The Housemaid's Secret before the sequel spoils it for you.
- The Housemaid's Wedding (short story). A quick bridge between the second and third books for completists.
- The Housemaid Is Watching (Book 3). Millie finally has a house of her own on a quiet cul-de-sac, until the neighbors and their own maid start to feel very wrong. Get The Housemaid Is Watching.
Is there a Housemaid sequel?
Yes, and it already has a date. The official Housemaid account confirmed The Housemaid's Secret is coming to theaters December 17, 2027. Since then it has welcomed Kirsten Dunst as Wendy, Paul Anthony Kelly as Douglas and Brittany Snow as Marybeth. That gives you a little over a year to read ahead, which is plenty of time to get through the whole series twice.
