Thundercat, the stage name of bassist and singer Stephen Bruner, has teamed up with chiptune producer Button Masher on a song for one of his favorite characters. "Moving at Light Speed" came out on October 7, 2026 on Brainfeeder, the Los Angeles label Thundercat has called home since his 2011 debut, and it was made to celebrate 35 years of Sonic the Hedgehog.

It is a stand-alone single, not the first taste of a new album. The track runs just 1 minute 47 seconds, and it is streaming now on Spotify and Apple Music, with a download on Bandcamp.

What it sounds like

Brainfeeder's own notes call the song upbeat and playful, with the golden ring sound from the games dropped in among the beats. Thundercat sings it in his high falsetto, and the label says he sounds overjoyed to lend his voice to one of his favorite characters. Button Masher handles the production, which the label describes as skittering, fast enough to match the pace of Sonic's world. The official visualiser on Thundercat's YouTube channel carries the same artwork as the single: Thundercat with his bass, wearing a glowing golden hood with spikes like Super Sonic, floating in space between a moon and a planet.

Who is Button Masher

Button Masher is Jake Silverman, a Baltimore arranger, electronic musician, composer and teacher. According to his official bio, he started mixing jazz fusion with chiptune, the bleepy sound of old game consoles, in 2018. He won the 2021 GRAMMY for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, for "Meta Knight's Revenge," arranged with Charlie Rosen and recorded by the 8-Bit Big Band, and he picked up a second nomination in 2024 for their arrangement of "The Last Surprise." He has also played alongside Phoenix, the 8-Bit Big Band and Adam Neely. He is now a Brainfeeder artist himself: his album Super Button Masher came out on the label on September 4, 2026.

Why Thundercat and Sonic make sense

Thundercat has never hidden where his heart is. His label bio says the name comes from the cartoon he has loved since childhood, and in 2020 he voiced a character and wrote a song for the Thundercats Roar series. His records are full of anime and game nods, from a single called "Final Fight" to "Dragonball Durag." A Sonic song is the most natural side quest he has taken.

The single landed two days before Club Chaos, a one-night Sonic 35th anniversary party in Brooklyn on October 9. The official event page lists Thundercat as a musical guest with Tee Lopes and Austin Millz, and the whole night was set to stream on the official Sonic channels for fans who could not make it to New York.

Where it fits in his year

It has been a busy 2026 for Bruner. His album Distracted came out on Brainfeeder on April 3, and he is out on a long North American tour right now. The label's tour list has him at The Ritz in Raleigh on October 14, then on through Charlotte, Richmond, Montreal and Kings Theatre in New York on October 23, with dates running into December, including the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on December 5. Dates and tickets are on Thundercat's Brainfeeder page.

How to hear it and what to grab
