Apple just gave the iPad mini its biggest update ever. In a press release today, October 26, the company unveiled a thinner, lighter mini with an OLED Super Retina XDR display, the A20 Pro chip, IP67 water and dust resistance, and landscape Center Stage. Search interest in the US is already climbing around "apple new ipad mini" and "new ipad mini 2026". Pre-orders open Wednesday, October 28, and the tablet ships Friday, November 6.

What changed

  • Display: 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR, with 24 percent thinner bezels so the screen grows while the footprint stays mini. Peak brightness hits 1200 nits, more than twice the previous generation, with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and an optional nano-texture glass finish that cuts glare outdoors.
  • Chip: A20 Pro, built on Apple's 2-nanometer process with packaging inspired by M-series chips. Apple says graphics jump by up to 2.7x and AI work by up to 4.5x versus the last mini, with Dual 16-core Neural Engine on the 512GB model.
  • Body: 5.4 mm thin, finished in midnight or starlight, and rated IP67 for water and dust. Apple calls it remarkably thinner and lighter than the previous generation.
  • Cameras and audio: 12MP Center Stage front camera moves to the landscape edge for video calls, with a 12MP Wide rear camera and Adaptive True Tone flash. A new Acoustic Display hides woofers and tweeters under the glass for punchier sound.
  • Wireless: Apple's N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models get the C2 modem for up to 50 percent faster cellular data than the previous mini, plus eSIM.

Software and Pencil

The new mini ships into iPadOS 27 with the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in beta. Apple pitches freer windowing, external display support with iPadOS 27.2, and on-device tools for photo cleanup and Image Playground. It supports both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and a new TechWoven Smart Folio in navy blue and taupe adds a two-panel stand with more viewing angles.

Configs and when you can buy

Storage options are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular. Nano-texture glass is available on the 256GB and 512GB models. Pre-orders start Wednesday, October 28 at 10:10 a.m. Pacific on apple.com, the Apple homepage and in the Apple Store app, with availability beginning Friday, November 6 at Apple Stores and authorized resellers.
