The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 has the same footprint as the M4, M3 and M2 models, so a case or sleeve made for those generations fits. This guide is the short list: three snap-on shells and three sleeves with strong buyer ratings when we checked, including Urban Armor Gear's Plyo. Pick a shell if you want protection on the desk, or a sleeve if you mainly need it safe in a bag.
A note on the ratings. The star ratings and review counts below are what each listing showed when we checked. Several of these listings cover more than one MacBook size, and the count is shared across them.
tomtoc 360 Protective Sleeve: best sleeve overall
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 27,776 ratings when we checked. The tomtoc 360 Protective Sleeve is tomtoc's padded sleeve for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5, with corner protection all the way around. tomtoc sells the same Defender-A13 sleeve on its own store.
MOSISO Sleeve Bag: best sleeve with a pocket

Comfyable Faux Leather Sleeve: best leather look

What we left out
We skipped generic hard shells with only a few reviews and cases made only for the 15-inch MacBook Air. UAG's Plyo listing had fewer ratings than the sleeves here, but a high score, so it earned a spot.
Still deciding on the laptop?
Apple's MacBook Air page compares the 13-inch and 15-inch models. Make sure you buy a case for the right size, since the 15-inch will not fit in a 13-inch sleeve.
How to choose
Shell or sleeve. A shell like the UAG Plyo or Spigen Urban Fit stays on the laptop and protects against bumps on the desk. A sleeve protects in the bag and comes off when you work.
Heat. The MacBook Air has no fan. A shell that covers the bottom can add a little warmth during heavy work, so leave a sleeve off while you use it.
Pockets. If you carry a charger, the MOSISO sleeve has room for it.
Check the model. Make sure 13-inch MacBook Air is the selected size before you add it to your cart.
Fit, heat and care tips
Keyboard and ports. Clip-on shells cover only the lid and the base, so the keyboard and ports stay open. Check that the shell's cutouts clear MagSafe and both USB-C ports, since a thick edge can block a chunky cable plug.
Check the size and year. The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are different sizes, and clip-on shells are cut for specific generations. Sleeves are more forgiving, since a laptop of the same footprint usually fits.
Shells and heat. The MacBook Air has no fan, so it relies on its aluminum body to shed heat. A hard shell can trap a little warmth during long exports. If you push the laptop hard, a sleeve you remove at your desk is the safer habit.
Grit under shells. Dust can get between a clip-on shell and the aluminum. Pop the shell off every few weeks and wipe both sides, or it can leave fine scratches, which is the very thing you bought it to prevent.
Chargers and accessories. Sleeves with a front pocket hold the charger, a cable and a small mouse. Thin sleeves without a pocket are lighter but mean a second bag for the extras.
Inside a backpack. If your bag already has a padded laptop slot, a slim sleeve or shell is usually enough. If you carry the laptop on its own or in a tote, pick a sleeve with corner padding.
