Some watches are bought as investments. The Casio F-91W is bought because it simply works. It is light, it keeps good time, the battery lasts for years and it looks the same today as it did when it launched in 1989. That combination has made it one of the most recognizable watches in the world.
Here is what the F-91W is, why it still matters and where to buy one.

What it is
The Casio F-91W is a quartz digital watch with a resin case and strap, a small light-gray display framed in blue and three side buttons. Casio's own specs list a case of about 38.2 by 35.2 millimeters and just 8.5 millimeters thick, so it disappears under a shirt cuff.
For something so small and inexpensive, the feature list is generous:
- Timekeeping. Hours, minutes, seconds, day and date, with a choice of 12 or 24-hour format.
- Accuracy. Casio rates it at plus or minus 30 seconds a month.
- Alarm. A daily alarm plus an hourly time signal that beeps on the hour.
- Stopwatch. Measures to one hundredth of a second up to 60 minutes, with elapsed time, split time and first and second place times.
- Calendar. An auto calendar that is programmed with 28 days for February.
- Light. A small microlight to read the display in the dark.
- Battery. Approximately seven years of life.
One thing to know before you buy: Casio rates the F-91W as splash resistant. It is fine in the rain and at the sink, but it is not a swimming or diving watch.
Where it came from
Casio introduced the F-91W in 1989 as part of its everyday watch line, and the company says it has been sold around the world since then with almost no changes to its basic design. Its sibling, the metal-cased A158W, launched the same year and has had the same quiet run.
Casio's own designers describe the work behind these classics in tiny increments. One team leader recalls being taught directly by the designer of the F-91W to be particular about a tenth of a millimeter, a habit he still uses when adjusting proportions today. That obsession is a big part of why the watch still looks right decades later.
Why it is still worth buying
- It is the definition of grab and go. There is nothing to wind, charge or sync. Set it once and forget about it for years.
- It is light. The resin case and strap make it one of the most comfortable watches to sleep, work or travel in.
- It is honest design. Every element on the face has a job, and the layout is readable at a glance.
- It is low risk. Wear it to the beach, on a hike or on a building site without worrying about scratches.
- It plays well with anything. It looks just as right with workwear as it does with a suit, which is why so many people who own expensive watches keep one in the drawer.
Which version to buy
- F-91W-1. The original black resin version with the blue frame. This is the one to start with.
- A158WA-1. The same era of Casio design in a stainless steel case and bracelet, with a digital display, stopwatch, daily alarm, light and auto calendar. Pick it if you want a little more presence on the wrist.
Casio has released other colors of the F-91W over the years, but the plain black original remains the reference point.
How it fits an everyday kit
The F-91W makes a natural backup to a mechanical watch or a full-time watch for people who do not want to think about one. If you are weighing it against something more rugged or analog, our field watch guide and microbrand watch picks cover the next step up. For the rest of the pocket, see our everyday carry essentials, and for another inexpensive classic that lasts for decades, read about the Zippo Classic Brushed Chrome.
When the battery finally runs down after years of use, any watch repair counter can swap it in a few minutes, and the resin strap is easy to replace if it ever cracks. Treated that way, one F-91W can last a very long time.
