Narnia: The Magician's Nephew just got its first trailer, and the search spike says everyone wants in. Netflix dropped the footage on Tuesday, October 13, for Greta Gerwig's take on the 1955 novel by C. S. Lewis (Clive Staples Lewis), and it is the first time that book has ever been adapted for the screen. It is the prequel that leads straight into The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and it is built for the biggest screen in the building: Netflix says it opens in IMAX and theaters on February 12, 2027, with sneak previews only in IMAX starting February 10, before it streams on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
What Gerwig is making
Gerwig wrote the screenplay and directs, and she has been a fan since childhood. In her own words, she fell in love with "the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life." That idea is right there in the official key art above: the silhouette of a lion's head filling a sky of stars and swirling color, with a winged horse flying straight through it.
Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead a cast that includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma, with Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep. The crew is stacked too. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked with Gerwig on Barbie, are writing the original score, with George Drakoulias as music supervisor. Seamus McGarvey shot it, Jacqueline Durran designed the costumes, and Neal Scanlan supervised the creature effects. Netflix handles distribution in North America, and Sony Pictures Entertainment distributes it outside North America. What the book is about
As the publisher tells it, two friends on a daring quest to save a life are hurled into another world, where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. Then the lion Aslan's song weaves itself into a new land, and that land becomes Narnia. It is the origin story of the whole saga, and it explains how all the comings and goings between our world and Narnia first began.
The Narnia books in order
Here is the fun part for anyone who wants to read before February. There are two ways to read the seven books. The series order, which is the order Netflix lists and the order Lewis preferred, starts with the new movie:
- The Magician's Nephew (1955)
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
- The Horse and His Boy (1954)
- Prince Caspian (1951)
- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
- The Silver Chair (1953)
- The Last Battle (1956)
If you would rather read them the way the first readers did, just follow the publication years. Either way, The Magician's Nephew works on its own, so you can start there tonight and still be caught up for the film.
