Twelve South's AirFly Pro 2 solves one of travel's most annoying problems. You bring wireless earbuds onto a plane, and the seatback screen only offers a headphone jack. Plug this small Bluetooth transmitter into that jack, pair your AirPods or any other Bluetooth headphones, and the in-flight movie plays straight to your ears. Twelve South now offers it in a Gold finish, a soft champagne tone in the brand's photos, and there's also an AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe bundle built for frequent flyers. With the holidays coming, it's one of the easiest travel gifts to get right.
What it does
The idea is simple: plug it into any standard headphone jack and pair your headphones. Twelve South points to airplane screens, treadmills and other gym equipment, classic stereos and gaming devices. It works with any brand of Bluetooth headphones, not only Apple's. Twelve South names Sony, Bose and Beats as examples.
It also works in reverse. A transmit and receive (TX/RX) toggle on the side flips it into receive mode, so your phone can stream music or podcasts through a car stereo, boat speakers, a treadmill or anything else with an auxiliary (AUX) input. Twelve South sums it up as designed for travel and perfect at home, and that second job is a big part of why it makes sense as a gift.
Two sets of headphones, one screen
The feature most travelers will use is dual pairing. Separate Pair 1 and Pair 2 buttons let two sets of wireless headphones connect to the same device, so two people can watch the same film on one seatback screen without a splitter or extra wires. Twelve South says the audio stays synced across both.
After the first setup, you don't have to pair again. AirFly Pro 2 reconnects automatically to the last two devices it used. According to Twelve South, the first reconnects in about 15 seconds and the second in about 35.

Gold, Silver and eight more colors
The AirFly Pro 2 comes in ten finishes on Twelve South's store: Gold, Silver, White, Black, Mint Ice, Coastal Blue, Glacial White, Black Ice, Teal and Fuchsia Ice. Gold and Silver are the newest. Twelve South's homepage introduces the Gold and Silver collection as two new finishes for two travel essentials, the AirFly Pro 2 and the PowerClip pocket power bank. On the Gold model, the body, the jack housing and the braided cable all match, so the whole thing looks more like jewelry than a gadget.
What the Deluxe adds
The AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe uses the same transmitter. When Twelve South explains how the two differ, it comes down to two extras: its International Airline Adapter and a premium faux suede travel bag. The adapter is for in-flight entertainment systems that use a dual-prong headphone outlet instead of a single standard jack. The Deluxe listing has no color choice, and Twelve South's photos show it in white.
If the person you're shopping for flies internationally or often, the Deluxe is the safer gift because it covers both kinds of seat outlet in one pouch. If you want the Gold finish, buy the standard model and add the Deluxe International Airline Headphone Adapter separately. Twelve South offers it as an add-on right on the AirFly Pro 2 page.
