iPhone Duo is the one iPhone you really do not want to carry bare. It has two screens, a titanium hinge and a camera bar that sits proud of the back, and it closes to 11.3 millimeters thick. A case for it has to protect both halves, leave the hinge free to move and still let the phone shut flat. Leather and folio
Nomad Traditional Leather Folio
This is the case to beat if you want your Duo to look better a year from now than it does on day one. Nomad designed it from the ground up for iPhone Duo and wraps the whole phone in full-grain, vegetable-tanned Horween leather from the USA. Horween keeps treatment to a minimum, so marks and scuffs fold into a patina rather than looking like damage. Inside there is a microfiber lining and a low-profile card slot that Nomad says holds up to three cards, and an anodized aluminum ring frames the cameras. Raised edges protect the screen and lenses, and it works with MagSafe and Qi2 chargers.
- Colors. Black, Rustic Brown and Saddle.
- Know before you buy. Nomad's support page says it does not work with MagSafe wallets, has no lanyard point and has no magnet holding the cover against the back when folded open.
- Value. Premium money, but it sits level with Apple's own folio and is real Horween leather.
Apple iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand
Apple's own folio is made from TechWoven, its custom technical fabric, and builds a kickstand into the cover so the phone can stand at a range of angles for reading, video or FaceTime. The stand snaps back flat when you are done. Built-in magnets line up with the phone, and you can charge through it with a MagSafe charger, a Qi2 25W charger or a Qi-certified pad, even with the stand open. It comes in taupe and navy blue, and has been orderable since preorder day.
ESR Atelier Magnetic Case with Flex Stand
For the leather look at a far friendlier cost, ESR's Atelier case uses a soft silicone leather outer with a Flex Stand that rotates and folds through 180 degrees. Closed, the stand doubles as a cover over the camera lenses. It is MagSafe compatible and comes in black, light gray, deep burgundy and misty blue. ESR also makes a slim Classic Hybrid and a rugged Cyber Tough for the Duo in its iPhone Duo collection.
Rugged
OtterBox Defender Series Pro XT
The heavy-duty pick. Defender Series Pro XT adds a rugged hinge guard that moves with the phone and lies flat when open, port covers to keep out dust, grippy edges and magnets for wireless charging. OtterBox says it passes four times the military drop standard. It showed as sold out on OtterBox when we checked, so sign up for the restock alert.
Pelican Ranger with MagSafe
Pelican's Ranger is the rugged case for people who hate rugged cases. It keeps a slim profile but claims 14-foot drop protection, with a reinforced back panel, cushioned corners, textured sides, button covers and extra-strength magnets for MagSafe. Pelican backs it with a lifetime warranty.
Spigen Tough Armor Pro (Mag Fit)
Tough Armor Pro pairs polycarbonate with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), uses Spigen's Air Cushion corners and covers the hinge with a slimmer protector that lies flat. Spigen warns that a few Mag Fit accessories may not fit around that hinge cover. It was sold out at check time. The closely related Slim Armor Pro was taking orders, but Spigen listed it as shipping in 45 business days.
Mous Limitless Fold
Mous brings its toughest build to the Duo with a genuine aramid fiber back, an interlocking TPU and polycarbonate shell, AiroShock corners and a one-piece TPU bridge that locks across the hinge. Mous says the magnets are 70 percent stronger than its previous generation. It is the most delayed case here: Mous lists shipping in late November to December and sends a free temporary recycled case in the meantime, so order it if you can wait.
Slim and minimal
Apple iPhone Duo Case
Apple's iPhone Duo Case is a thin, light two-part shell in matte-coated polycarbonate that wraps both halves. Magnets line up for MagSafe, and it works with Qi2 25W and Qi-certified chargers. Choose from sand or navy blue.
totallee Scarf
If you want the Duo to feel like it has no case at all, totallee's Scarf is 0.03 inches thin and weighs about 0.2 ounces, with no logos. It is two separate pieces of polypropylene with a lip around the camera and screen, and totallee rates it for 4-foot drops. It does not block MagSafe charging, but it has no magnets of its own, so magnetic wallets and mounts will not grip.
OtterBox Lumen Series
Lumen Series is OtterBox's thin option: a two-piece design that flexes with the fold, a scratch-resistant finish, raised edges, built-in MagSafe magnets and anchors for straps and charms. It is rated to three times the military drop standard and made with 50 percent recycled content. It was out of stock on OtterBox at check time.
Clear
Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro (Mag Fit)
Want to show off star white or night sky? Ultra Hybrid Pro is clear polycarbonate infused with blue resin for long-lasting clarity, with SecuLink locking the front and rear pieces together, hinge coverage and MagSafe compatibility. Spigen's store listed it as shipping in 45 business days, so order early.
totallee Spy
The Spy is totallee's clear case: 0.04 inches thin, a shock-absorbing TPU border, a hard clear back, covered buttons and a hinge that joins the two halves. totallee rates it for 6-foot drops, and it is one of the better values on this list.
Designer
BURGA Elite
Foldable cases have mostly meant black and bulky. BURGA puts its whole catalog of more than 500 in-house designs, from marble to florals to bold prints, on its slim Elite case for the Duo. Each one is two precision-molded parts that let the phone close flat, with textured sides for grip, raised edges around the camera bar, drop testing and MagSafe compatibility. BURGA was running a buy two, get two free offer across the collection.
Best value
Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe
The most affordable case on this list, and it still covers the hinge. Gripmunk has air pocket corners, raised edges over the screen and camera, textured sides and strong MagSafe magnets. Smartish wraps the hinge and adds six magnets so the case stays snug against the back when the phone is folded. It is listed to ship by October 22.

How to choose
- Check the hinge. Cases that cover the hinge add protection but can add bulk or block some magnetic accessories. Cases that leave it open keep the phone at its thinnest.
- Decide on magnets. iPhone Duo charges with MagSafe and Qi2 up to 25W. If you use magnetic wallets, stands or car mounts, pick a case with built-in magnets.
- Want a stand? The Duo was made for propping open. Apple's folio and the ESR Atelier both have one built in.
- Do not forget the screens. Pair your case with a protector made specifically for iPhone Duo, and check which display it covers.
