The 11-inch iPad Air M4 keeps the same shape as the M3 and M2 models, so a case made for those generations fits. This guide is the short list: six cases that name the M4 model, with strong buyer ratings when we checked, plus Urban Armor Gear's Metropolis SE folio. They range from thin folios to rugged cases built for kids and job sites.
A note on the ratings. The star ratings and review counts below are what each listing showed when we checked. Most of these listings cover several iPad Air generations, and the count is shared across them.
ZUGU Case: best stand case
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 13,559 ratings when we checked. The ZUGU Case is made for the iPad Air 11-inch M4, M3 and M2 and the 10.9-inch 5th and 4th generations. ZUGU uses a dual-layer PC and TPU shell it drop tests from 5 feet, an 8-angle magnetic stand, auto sleep and wake, and a holder that charges an Apple Pencil Pro or 2nd generation Pencil.
Fintie Clear Case: best clear back
Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 34,953 ratings when we checked. The Fintie Clear Case has a clear back so the iPad's color shows through, and it fits the 11-inch M4, M3 and M2 models.
TiMOVO Case: best value folio
Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 26,876 ratings when we checked. The TiMOVO Case is a folio for the iPad Air 11-inch M4, M3 and M2, sold in several colors including Abyss Blue.
OtterBox Defender: best rugged case
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 48 ratings when we checked. The OtterBox Defender is OtterBox's multi-layer rugged case for the iPad Air 11-inch M4, M3 and M2. It is newer, so its count is small. OtterBox lists the Defender line on its own store.
TORRAS Ostand K3 Neo: best built-in stand
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 264 ratings when we checked. The TORRAS Ostand K3 Neo has a built-in stand and fits the iPad Air 11-inch M4, M3 and M2.
UAG Metropolis SE: best UAG folio
Rated 3.8 out of 5 from 60 ratings when we checked. The UAG Metropolis SE is Urban Armor Gear's folio for the iPad Air 11-inch. UAG describes a featherlight composite build that is military drop tested, a soft impact-resistant core, a folio cover that doubles as a stand and an Apple Pencil holder. Its rating was lower than the others here, from a small number of reviews, so weigh that. UAG sells the M4 version on its own store.
What we left out
We skipped keyboard cases, which are a different category, and cases sold only for the 13-inch iPad Air. We also skipped listings that did not name the M4 model.
Still deciding on the tablet?
Apple's iPad Air page compares the 11-inch and 13-inch models. Make sure you buy a case for the right size.
How to choose
Folio or shell. A folio like the TiMOVO or UAG Metropolis SE covers the screen and folds into a stand. A rugged case like the OtterBox Defender protects the edges best.
Pencil. If you use an Apple Pencil, look for a holder. The UAG Metropolis SE has one built in.
Weight. Rugged cases add weight. If you carry the iPad all day, a thinner folio is easier.
Check the model. Make sure iPad Air 11-inch is the selected size before you add it to your cart.
Fit, Pencil and care tips
Drop protection. Slim folios guard against scratches and short tumbles. For kids, travel or a job site, a tougher case like the OtterBox or UAG is the better fit, even if it adds some weight. ZUGU lists its full lineup on its own store, and Fintie does the same on its store.
Check the size and model. The iPad Air comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, and cases are cut for each. The 11-inch M4 keeps the shape of the M3 and M2 models, so many cases list all three, but confirm the camera and button cutouts match.
Pencil charging. The Apple Pencil Pro and the 2nd generation Pencil charge on the side of the iPad. A case needs an open edge or a charging slot there. Some folios cover the edge with a flap, which can block charging.
Keyboards. If you plan to use the Magic Keyboard, most folio cases need to come off first. A slim shell or a case built to pair with a keyboard saves you swapping every day.
Sleep and wake. Most folios here wake the iPad when the cover opens and put it to sleep when it closes. If that stops working, check that the cover is aligned and that nothing is between the magnets and the screen.
Cleaning. Wipe faux leather and plastic with a damp cloth. Pull the iPad out every so often to clear dust from the back, which can rub against the aluminum over time.
