Whalefall is everywhere in search right now, and the reason is simple: the movie about a diver swallowed whole by a sperm whale opens in theaters this Friday, October 16. 20th Century Studios is releasing it exclusively on the big screen, rated PG-13, with Austin Abrams as the trapped diver and Josh Brolin as the father whose shadow follows him into the deep. The pitch is one of the most claustrophobic in years. One kid. One whale. One hour of oxygen. And behind it all is a novel by Daniel Kraus, who has since won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which makes this the rare survival thriller with a seriously literary pedigree.
What Whalefall is about
Here is the setup from the studio. After the death of his father, Jay Gardiner goes diving off the central coast of California to search for his remains. Instead, he is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. Trapped in its belly with only one hour of air left in his tank, Jay starts to realize that the hard lessons his father drilled into him may be the only way out. It is a creature feature, a ticking clock thriller and a father and son story all at once, and the trailer leans hard into the dark, wet, pressure-cooker terror of being inside something alive.
Who made it
Whalefall is directed by Brian Duffield, who wrote the screenplay with Kraus. If that name rings a bell for genre fans, Duffield also made No One Will Save You, the alien siege thriller from the same studio. Whalefall is a 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment production, with Brian Grazer producing alongside Duffield, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum. In an official statement on the studio press site, Duffield said the cast and crew "spent a summer inside a whale inside a sound stage in Studio City, California." That practical, built-for-real approach is exactly what this kind of movie needs.
The cast
Austin Abrams carries the movie as Jay, with Josh Brolin as his father. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd round out the cast. Brolin is the father whose hard-earned lessons Jay has to lean on to escape, which is where the story finds its heart.
Read the book before Friday
The novel came out in 2023, became a USA Today bestseller and won the Alex Award, and Kraus followed it with Angel Down, the World War I novel that took the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Kraus is also the coauthor of The Shape of Water and Trollhunters with Guillermo del Toro, and of The Living Dead with George A. Romero, so his horror credentials run deep. His publisher, Atria Books at Simon & Schuster, released a movie tie-in edition in August. Here is where to start:
- The movie edition. Whalefall: A Novel, media tie-in paperback is the new edition published for the film, an easy grab before your Friday night ticket.
- The keeper. Whalefall: A Novel, hardcover is the original 2023 edition, the one to put on the shelf.
- The Pulitzer winner. Angel Down, hardcover is the follow-up, five soldiers and a fallen angel in No Man's Land, told in one breathless sentence.
His publisher bills it as a scientifically accurate thriller, and with Kraus cowriting the screenplay, the movie keeps his voice in the room. More on the author at DanielKraus.com.
