Some overdrive pedals add their own flavor on top of your amp. The BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver does something different. It behaves like a tube amp pushed hard, reacting to how you pick and how far you turn your guitar's volume knob. That is why so many players leave it switched on all night.

Here is what the BD-2 is, why it has lasted so long and where to buy one.

What it is

The BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver is an analog overdrive pedal in the classic BOSS compact housing. It has three knobs: Level, Tone and Gain. Level sets the output volume, Tone shapes the high-end response and Gain sets how much drive you get.

BOSS says the BD-2 was conceived from the start to reproduce the interactive gain and compression of a tube amplifier. To get there, its engineers developed a multi-stage clipping circuit inspired by real amps. The result is an overdrive that changes character with your picking attack and cleans up smoothly as you roll back your guitar's volume.

Where it came from

The BD-2 has been in continuous production since 1995, which makes it one of the longest-running overdrives you can still buy new. BOSS describes it as an enduring icon in guitar overdrive, and it is used across blues, rock, country, jazz and beyond. Its blue housing is one of the most familiar sights on a pedalboard.

Why it is still worth buying

  • It feels like an amp. Play softly and the tone stays nearly clean with a little bloom. Dig in and it bites. That touch sensitivity is the main reason players love it.
  • It has a wide range. BOSS points out that lower gain settings give a mild breakup that suits chord work and arpeggios, while higher settings get fatter and more saturated, like a cranked vintage amp.
  • It works as a boost. With gain low and level up, the BD-2 can push another drive pedal or a high-gain amp harder while keeping definition and clarity.
  • It is not just for blues. Despite the name, it suits almost any style that uses overdrive.
  • It is built to last. The BOSS compact housing is famously tough, and BOSS backs the pedal with a five-year warranty.

How to set it

A good starting point is everything at noon, then adjust to taste. For an always-on edge of breakup, keep gain low and set level so the pedal is slightly louder than your bypassed signal. For leads, push the gain past halfway. The Tone knob is sensitive, so make small moves, especially with bright amps or single coil pickups. Then use your guitar's volume knob as your gain control during songs. That is where the BD-2 really shines.

On a pedalboard, the BD-2 usually sits after a tuner such as the BOSS TU-3 and a wah such as the Dunlop Cry Baby, and before modulation like the MXR Phase 90. For heavier tones, stack it with the BOSS DS-1 or compare it with another modern drive, the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes.

The details

According to BOSS, the BD-2 draws 20 milliamps (mA) of current, so it runs from a standard 9-volt battery or a BOSS PSA-series adapter, and a CHECK indicator on top also shows when the battery needs attention. It weighs about 13 ounces with a battery fitted, and it shares its footprint with every other BOSS compact pedal, so it slots onto almost any board. The large pedal switch covers most of the top of the pedal, which makes it easy to hit in the dark, and the knobs sit up high where they are protected from stray feet.

Many players treat it as an always-on pedal that shapes their core sound. A soft touch brings out a rich harmonic bloom around each note, while a hard attack delivers a sharper tone that cuts through the band. That makes it a great first overdrive for anyone learning how dynamics work with drive.

BD-2 vs BD-2W

BOSS also offers a Waza Craft version, the BD-2W. Waza Craft is the BOSS line of premium versions of its compact pedals. The standard BD-2 is the one that built the reputation, and it is where most players should start.

Where to buy

The BD-2 is sold through BOSS dealers worldwide and from most music retailers.
