Square instant photos just got a new hero camera. Fujifilm today announced the instax SQUARE 2, a fresh take on its square format instant camera with a newly sculpted body, three soft colors and one genuinely new trick: a Mood Filter Switch that warms or cools your shots before the print even pops out. Fujifilm says it lands in late October 2026, and its UK site lists availability from October 28.

The design

This is the part design people will notice first. Fujifilm calls it a clean, new sculpted body, and its official product site points to the details: a smooth, rounded form with debossed logo detailing and a textured grip that fits in your hand. The three colors are Slate Blue, Misty White and Brick Red, all muted rather than toy-bright, and Fujifilm sells a camera case and an acrylic frame separately.

The controls are twist-to-operate, so you turn the lens ring to pick one of three focus modes instead of hunting for buttons. A built-in selfie mirror pairs with Close-up mode, so self-portraits come out sharp instead of guessed.

The new Mood Filter Switch

Instant film has always been about taking what you get. The SQUARE 2 gives you a little more say. Slide its Mood Filter Switch and a filter moves over the lens. There are three positions: Warm for a subtle golden tone, Cool for crisp, blue-toned color, and Off for the classic instax film look. Pair that with Fujifilm's automatic exposure and automatic flash, and the camera handles the technical side while you choose the feel.

"We've heard from our customers that they've been looking for a new SQUARE camera, so we're really excited to introduce a fresh design with brand new features," said Karina Thomsen, Marketing Director, European Consumer Imaging at FUJIFILM Europe, in the official announcement.

The specs that matter

  • Shooting modes: Close-up (0.3 to 0.5 m), Standard (0.5 to 3 m) and Landscape (3 m and beyond).
  • Lens: f=65.75 mm at 1:12.6, with a shutter range of 1/2 to 1/400 second.
  • Prints: 62 x 62 mm square images on instax SQUARE film, which develop in about 90 seconds.
  • Power: four AA batteries, good for about 30 film packs, and they come in the box with a hand strap.
  • Size and weight: 139 x 119.5 x 71 mm and 450 g without batteries.

A new film to go with it

Fujifilm is also launching Soft Haze, a new instax SQUARE film with reduced saturation and contrast. The company says it gives photos a softer overall look, with glowing highlights and warm, diffused shadows. Each pack has 10 exposures, and it is also due in late October. Combine Soft Haze with the Warm filter and you have a dreamy, faded look straight out of the camera, no editing app involved.

Why it matters

Square instant prints have a cult following, partly because they look like little album covers. Fujifilm says customers had been asking for a new SQUARE camera. The SQUARE 2 does not chase specs. It goes for feel: calmer colors, a nicer body and a simple way to shift mood. That is exactly the kind of camera people keep on a shelf because it looks good there.
