Fifty years on, the record that taught heavy metal how to sound like heavy metal is getting the treatment it deserves. Judas Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny 50th anniversary edition has been newly remixed and remastered from the original 1976 tapes, and the vinyl release date is close. The double LP and CD hit stores Friday, November 27, and the band's label, Exciter Records, starts shipping early copies tomorrow, November 6.
Searches for "sad wings of destiny 50th anniversary release date" and "sad wings of destiny 50th anniversary vinyl" have been rising as fans try to work out which version to buy. Here is what is new, what is on the record and how to get it first.
Sad Wings of Destiny 50th anniversary: what's new
This is a true remix, not just a fresh master. Longtime Judas Priest producer Tom Allom produced the new edition, working from the original 1976 analogue multitrack master tapes, which were transferred and preserved at British Grove Studios in London. The label promises fresh clarity, depth and separation on songs that have only ever been heard one way.
The bigger change for longtime fans is the running order. The new edition restores the band's original sequence, opening with "Prelude" and "Tyrant" instead of "Victim of Changes," so the album plays the way the band intended. A remixed "Diamonds and Rust" closes the record as a bonus track.
Sad Wings of Destiny 50th anniversary vinyl and CD formats
- Remixed and Remastered 2LP: half-speed mastered, cut at 45 revolutions per minute (RPM) across two 180 gram black vinyl discs for an audiophile presentation
- Remixed and Remastered CD: the same new mix and running order
- Original 1976 Masters: the album as it was first released, on LP and CD, in stores since October 9 for purists who want the classic mix
The tracklist on the new double LP runs Prelude, Tyrant, Genocide, Epitaph, Island of Domination, Victim of Changes, The Ripper, Dreamer Deceiver, Deceiver and Diamonds and Rust. Spreading ten songs over four sides at 45 RPM is a choice built for sound, not convenience, and it is the version to own if you have a good turntable.
