Comandante C40 MK4: The Hand Coffee Grinder Built Around Nitro Blade Burrs

The Comandante C40 is a robust manual coffee grinder made in Germany around its own Nitro Blade burr. Here is how a coffee roaster's search for a better hand grinder led to it, and who should own one.

Ask people who brew pour over or espresso at home about hand grinders and one name comes up again and again: Comandante. The C40 is a tall, slim manual grinder with a wooden knob on its crank and a reputation for precise, clean grinding. It is not the cheapest way to grind coffee, but it is one of the most respected, and the story behind it explains why.

Who makes it

The C40 is made by Comandante in Germany. The company was founded by Bernd Braune, who tells the story on Comandante's own pages. He started a small specialty coffee roastery in 2005 and spent years roasting, cupping and traveling to meet producers at origin. Brewing in the field was manageable, but precise grinding was the real challenge. None of the hand grinders he tried gave him the clarity or consistency he wanted.

Braune noted that most conical burrs at the time were designed for electric grinders, and that nobody had really thought about what a precision burr for manual use would need: great grind quality, smooth torque, comfortable handling and clean particle distribution. So he set out to build one. After years of prototyping and testing, he launched his first hand grinder based on the Nitro Blade burr, the C40 MK3, in 2015. The current generation is the C40 MK4.

What the C40 MK4 is

The Comandante C40 MK4 Nitro Blade is a manual burr grinder. Comandante describes it as robust and precise, built around its own Nitro Blade burr, which it credits with changing the world of specialty coffee. The burr is made from a custom steel the company calls Nitro Rex, produced in an Alpine region with a long tradition of steelmaking.

The black version has a powder coated finish. In the box you get:

  • The C40 MK4 grinder with Nitro Blade burr
  • A crank with an oak knob
  • A clear polymer bean jar, which Comandante calls basically unbreakable
  • A dark glass bean jar with lid
  • A Comandante wrist band
  • A merino wool felt mat

Each bean jar holds 40 grams of coffee. Comandante says both are tasteless, food safe and easy to clean with hot water. The grinder is made in Germany.

Why it is cool

The burr is the heart of any grinder, and the C40 was designed from the burr outward. Because it was conceived as a manual burr from the start rather than adapted from an electric grinder, the whole tool is built around the way a hand grinder is actually used. That focus on grind quality is what earned the C40 its following among serious home brewers and competitors alike.

It is also a beautifully practical object. The tall body fits comfortably in the hand, the crank turns smoothly, and the glass and polymer jars let you choose between a premium feel at home and a near unbreakable option for travel. The felt mat protects your counter and keeps the grinder steady.

A hand grinder also brings a slower pace to the morning. There is no motor noise, no cord and no need for a power outlet. That makes the C40 just as useful at a campsite or in a hotel room as it is in a kitchen.

Using it well

Weigh your beans first and fill the jar no higher than its 40 gram capacity. Set the grind with the adjustment wheel under the burr, starting coarser for French press and pour over and finer for espresso style brewing, then adjust by taste. Hold the body firmly and turn the crank at a steady pace. If the coffee tastes sour, try a finer setting. If it tastes bitter or harsh, go coarser.

How to care for it

Keep the grinder dry. Brush out the burr and catch jar regularly to remove old grounds, and clean the jars with hot water as Comandante recommends. Avoid washing the grinder body or burr in water. If you change between very different coffees, grinding a few beans first helps clear out old grounds.

Who should buy it

Buy the C40 MK4 if you brew pour over, AeroPress or French press and want a grinder that can match a good electric model, if you travel with coffee gear, or if you value a well made tool that should last for years.

Skip it if you make several cups at once every morning and want speed, or if hand grinding sounds like a chore. An electric burr grinder will suit you better.
