Most laptop bags look tired after a couple of years. The Filson Original Briefcase is built to look better. It is a plain, boxy bag of waxed cotton twill and thick leather, made by a Seattle company that started out outfitting gold prospectors, and it has become one of the most recognizable work bags in America.

Here is what the Original Briefcase is, why it lasts, which version to pick and where to buy one.

What it is

The Rugged Twill Original Briefcase is a soft-sided briefcase made from Filson's own Rugged Twill fabric with Bridle Leather trim. Filson says the lightly waxed fabric sheds water and stands up to abrasion year after year. The carry handles and the detachable, adjustable shoulder strap are cut from the same Bridle Leather used to make horse tack.

Inside, there are organizational dividers and room for a 15-inch laptop. The main compartment closes with a solid brass zipper protected by a storm flap, so rain runs off rather than seeping through the teeth. On the outside, a front pocket keeps a notebook or a phone close, and the small red-and-white Filson label sits right in the middle.

Filson likes to share one story about it. A customer, the company says, recorded more than one million miles of travel with his Original Briefcase. It is a good summary of what people buy it for.

Why it lasts

The bag makes more sense once you know where Filson came from. According to the company's history, Clinton C. Filson opened his first store on Seattle's First Avenue in 1897, after the steamship Portland docked loaded with gold from the Yukon and set off a rush of prospectors heading north. He sold them the clothing and gear they needed to survive the weather, backed by a satisfaction guarantee.

Over the next century, Filson became known for workwear that loggers, hunters, anglers and the U.S. Forest Service relied on. Its Cruising Shirt received a U.S. patent in 1914. In the 1980s and 1990s, Filson expanded beyond workwear into bags and luggage made from industrial-strength Rugged Twill and Bridle Leather, and those heritage bags became a major part of the brand.

The materials are the reason they age well. Waxed twill picks up creases and a soft sheen with use, and Bridle Leather darkens and softens. A well-used Original Briefcase looks lived in rather than worn out, which is exactly the point. Filson also backs its products with a guarantee and runs a repairs service, so a broken strap or a blown seam does not have to mean a new bag.

Which version to buy

  • Tan. The classic color, and the one most people picture. It shows patina fastest, which is the appeal.
  • Otter Green. A darker olive that hides scuffs and suits outdoor kit.
  • Black. The most office-friendly option, and the one that pairs best with tailoring.

If you carry a lot, Filson also makes a larger Tin Cloth 24 Hour Briefcase. For most people, though, the Original is the right size. It fits a laptop, a charger, a notebook and a book without turning into luggage.

The honest tradeoff is weight. Thick canvas and leather are heavier than nylon, and the bag has a structured shape rather than a slim one. If you want something light that disappears on your shoulder, look elsewhere. If you want a bag that will still be around in 20 years, this is it.

How to wear it

The Original Briefcase looks right with almost anything rugged. Pair it with a pair of Levi's 501s, boots from our heritage boots guide and a classic folding knife like the Buck 110, and you have a complete heritage kit. If you travel more than you commute, our carry-on travel backpacks guide covers bags built for the airport.
