Killspencer has spent years building two backpacks that people keep asking to combine: the feature-packed Utility Backpack and the lighter, simpler Daypack. The Utility Daypack 2.0 is that combination, refreshed and handmade at the brand's Los Angeles headquarters. Killspencer calls it a highly technical travel bag, and the spec sheet backs that up.
What it is made of
The Utility Daypack 2.0 comes in two versions, Black Leather and Black Italian Nylon and Leather. Killspencer lists:
- Premium full-grain leather and suede
- Swiss-made Riri black water-resistant Aquazip zippers
- Foam-padded leather shoulder straps
- A full lining in Killspencer's IFAC class 1 fire-retardant, waterproof black nylon
Riri zippers come up again and again on Killspencer's best bags, and the Aquazip version adds water resistance where a bag is most likely to let rain in. The all-leather version is the dressier of the two, while the Italian nylon version pairs a technical fabric body with leather trim for a more travel-ready feel.
How it is organized
This is where the Utility DNA shows. Inside there is a black bull hide leather passport patch, a large slip pocket and two smaller slip pockets. Killspencer says those smaller pockets are designed around a pocket-size Moleskine sketchbook and pens, business cards and a lighter, which tells you exactly who this bag was designed for. There is a separate zippered computer compartment that Killspencer says fits a MacBook Pro, plus an easy access zippered pocket at the top for the things you reach for most.
The listed dimensions are 12 by 18 by 6 inches, with two 4.25 inch square accessory pockets, and Killspencer puts the weight at about 4 lbs. That is heavier than a nylon daypack, as you would expect from full-grain leather, but it is a bag that should look better in ten years than it does on day one.
Where it sits in the lineup
If you want the full organizer, the original Utility Backpack adds an external padded laptop compartment, 4,000 lb test Mil-Spec webbing, an internal secret pocket and a leather wall mount system. We covered it in detail in our Killspencer Utility Backpack post. If you want the cleanest look, the Special Ops Backpack 3.0 drops to about 2.5 lbs with one vertical exterior pocket and comes in leather, canvas and nylon colorways.
The Utility Daypack 2.0 sits right between them: more organized than the Special Ops, lighter and slimmer than the Utility. For a one-bag commute that doubles as a flight bag, it may be the sweet spot in the range. If you are comparing it with nylon options, our best carry-on travel backpacks guide is a useful counterpoint.
