Sports shooters have been carrying two lenses, or a lens and a loose teleconverter, for as long as anyone can remember. Nikon just folded that whole routine into one barrel. The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, announced on October 29, is a fast telephoto zoom for full frame Z mount cameras with a 1.4x teleconverter built right in. Nikon says it is the first zoom with a constant f/2.8 aperture to do that.
The big idea: 420mm with one flick
At its native range the lens covers 120mm to 300mm at f/2.8 all the way through. Engage the built-in teleconverter and it jumps to 420mm, with the maximum aperture dropping to f/4. There is no mount to open, no dust to let in and no fumbling at the side of a pitch while the play happens without you. Nikon pitches it squarely at sport, from dim indoor arenas such as figure skating rinks to outdoor events like tennis and football where you are stuck far from the action.
The weight is the other surprise. Even with the extra glass inside, Nikon puts it at about 2,735 g, roughly 515 g lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR Nikon released in 2020. On a long day courtside, that difference is felt in the shoulders.
Autofocus, coatings and stabilisation
Focus is driven by Nikon's Silky Swift VCM motor, which pairs a voice coil motor with a guide mechanism built for fast, smooth tracking of athletes who change direction without warning. Both the focusing and zoom are internal, so the lens stays the same length whether you are racking focus or zooming, which keeps the balance steady on a monopod.
The optics get Meso Amorphous Coat, which Nikon calls its best anti-reflection coating yet, along with ARNEO Coat to cut ghosting and flare when stadium lights or a low sun creep into the frame. Vibration reduction is rated at 6.5 stops when paired with a camera that supports Synchro VR, measured by Nikon on a Z6III without the teleconverter engaged.
Built for the sideline
The small details tell you this was designed with working photographers in the room.
- The tripod collar accepts Arca-Swiss screw type clamps directly, and it has a rubber cushion with an integrated finger grip for carrying.
- It takes both front screw-on filters and rear slip-in filter holders.
- The included HB-120 bayonet hood has no protruding parts, so it goes on and off quickly and packs flat.
- The body uses magnesium alloy, with extensive sealing against dust and drips.
The Nikon USA announcement lists availability from mid-November 2026, and the Nikon USA product page is the place to check current pricing and stock. Full specifications are on the Nikon imaging site.
Why it matters
This one is Surfacing. Built-in teleconverters used to be reserved for the most exotic super telephoto primes. Putting one inside a constant f/2.8 zoom, and making it lighter than the lens before it, is the kind of practical leap that changes what working sports photographers carry to every match. It is not a casual purchase, but it is the most interesting lens Nikon has shown in a while.
