The Zelda Switch 2 is officially here. Nintendo's Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition launches today, Thursday, October 29, marking four decades of the series with a black and gold dock, green and gold Joy-Con 2 controllers and a golden Triforce up front. If you were hoping to just add one to your cart this morning, though, Nintendo Store lists the system as out of stock, along with all three matching accessories.
What makes this one different
Nintendo describes the system as having a design inspired by the Legend of Zelda series. The dock gets the biggest change. Its black and gold surface carries decorations from the games along with the golden symbol of the Triforce, the three-part relic at the heart of the story. Patterns and symbols from the series also run across the back of the console and the back of the dock.
The included Joy-Con 2 controllers come in what Nintendo calls the classic green and gold colors, with Zelda-inspired decorations on top. Nintendo notes that no game is included in the box.
Under the shell, it is a standard Switch 2
Inside, this is the same Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. According to Nintendo, you get:
- A 7.9 inch 1080p screen, with up to 4K output on a compatible TV and game through the included dock (4K is capped at 60 frames per second).
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop and handheld.
- 256GB of internal storage, part of which is used by the system, expandable with microSD Express cards sold separately.
- Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically and offer mouse controls in compatible games.
- GameChat for voice chat, screen sharing and video chat with a compatible USB camera, which needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Support for compatible physical and digital games from the original Nintendo Switch library.
In the box: the Nintendo Switch 2 system, Joy-Con 2 (L) and Joy-Con 2 (R) in green and gold, the Nintendo Switch 2 dock, a Joy-Con 2 grip, two Joy-Con 2 straps, the AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable and an Ultra High Speed High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable.
The matching accessories
Three Zelda accessories launch alongside it, also on October 29:
- Pro Controller plus display stand, a Nintendo Store exclusive with a custom stand that shows a map of Hyrule.
- Pro Controller on its own, decorated with patterns inspired by the series.
- Carrying Case and Screen Protector, a black case with a gold Triforce on the front.
As of this morning, all three are listed as out of stock on Nintendo Store as well. For current pricing and any return to stock, the product pages are the place to watch.
Buying one in person in New York
Nintendo's own shop in New York City, Nintendo NEW YORK, is selling the system today in two sessions, 9 AM to 12 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM, and each requires a Warp Pipe Pass reservation. Those passes opened on October 20 and were limited, first come, first served, with one system per customer. The three accessories do not need a pass and are sold while supplies last, one of each per customer.
What comes next
The console arrives a week before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, completely reborn for Nintendo Switch 2 and due November 5. Nintendo says the new version lets the Switch 2 microphone hear a melody you hum or play, adds fully voiced cutscenes and full orchestral music, and introduces the Hall of Fallen Heroes for rematches with defeated monsters. We covered the details in our Ocarina of Time remake preorder post.
Our call
This is a special edition you buy for the dock as much as the game library. The Triforce front looks great under a TV, and the green and gold Joy-Con 2 controllers are a clear tribute to the series. If you missed today's drop, keep the Nintendo Store page open and check back rather than paying a reseller.
