Loretta Lynn and Jack White made one of the great odd-couple records of the 2000s, and for years it has been hard to find. Third Man Records announced Thursday that Van Lear Rose returns on November 13, 2026, on streaming, CD and vinyl, remastered from the original analog tapes. Pre-orders are open now, and the first single is out.
The record that changed her story
By 2004 Lynn was already a legend, with a career stretching back more than sixty years. Recording on her 42nd solo album began that January, and the producer's chair went to a 28 year old Jack White, a longtime fan who saw the sessions as a chance to blend two very different ways of writing, playing and producing. The result won the Grammy for Best Country Album, and "Portland, Oregon," her duet with White, took Best Country Collaboration with Vocals.
That pairing reads as a cultural landmark now: a country elder and an indie rock star making something neither would have made alone. It is also just a great record to put on the turntable and play front to back.
What is new in this edition
This is more than a repress. Here is what Third Man says you get:
- "Just to Have You Back," a song that until now lived only on Third Man's Vault version of the album, added to the end of the tracklist
- A fresh remaster cut from the original analog tapes
- Fourteen tracks in all, from "Van Lear Rose" and "Portland, Oregon" through "Family Tree," "Women's Prison," "Mrs. Leroy Brown" and "Miss Being Mrs."
- The single "Miss Being Mrs." to stream now, with an album pre-save open
The formats and the price
On Third Man's store the pre-order is listed as Van Lear Rose Expanded, shipping November 13. Black vinyl is $28, and the "Excellente Orange" indie vinyl is $29 while supplies last. The CD is $15. If you care about color, the orange pressing is the one to lock in early, since the label is calling it a limited run.
If you would rather shop elsewhere, the album's listing here showed the November 13 vinyl at $27.98 and the CD at $14.98 when we checked Friday morning. The older 2016 pressing was listed at $244.75 from a third-party seller, which tells you how much demand there has been for a clean copy.
Why it matters now
Reissue season is crowded, but few bring back a record this well loved that has been this scarce. Third Man says it is the first time in seven years the album has been available to fans, and the streaming return means the new edition works for anyone who just wants to hear it, not only for people who want it on wax.
