Search interest in the Stylophone On-The-Fly spiked as soon as Dubreq, the company behind the pocket synthesizer, published the official launch note today. The new unit is a Stylophone On-The-Fly performance sequencer, built for the Stylophone Pro Range and the Music Lab series, and it treats sequencing like an instrument you play instead of a list you edit after the fact.
That launch note matters for people who already own a Stylophone Gen X-2, BEAT or the Compact Portable Modular pieces, because On-The-Fly is meant to sit at the center of those setups rather than replace them. It is a sequencer first, not another stylus keyboard, and Dubreq is pitching it as something you play with both hands while the pattern keeps going.
According to the official Stylophone announcement, every control responds while the sequence is running. There are no menus to dive through and no need to stop the pattern to change it.
Stylophone On-The-Fly performance sequencer overview
How On-The-Fly turns eight steps into longer patterns
You can program just eight steps and immediately reach multiple 16, 32 or 64-step patterns, then switch between those pattern chains while the groove keeps moving. Direction flips among Forward, Reverse and Bounce without breaking time. Per-step moves include slide, ratchet, rest, tie and controlled randomness, so a short idea can stretch into something that keeps changing under your hands.
The unit stores 24 sequence memories and eight live-switchable pattern chains. A momentary performance button is there for instant fills. Groove controls cover tempo, swing, lead and lag timing, note length and gate length. Musical scale and transpose can be driven from the onboard knob, from Control Voltage (CV, the analog signal modular gear uses to set pitch and parameters) or from Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), the digital protocol that lets instruments and computers share notes and clock.
Loop Record, CV and Eurorack outs
Loop Record captures a performance of up to 128 steps, with 24 dedicated loop recording memories. On the back of the box, Dubreq put full Eurorack CV, Gate, Sync and MIDI connectivity so the sequencer can sit in a modular case, talk to MIDI gear or run a hybrid desktop setup. Eurorack is the modular synthesizer format that uses standardized rails and 3.5 millimeter jacks. Eight individual step Gate Outputs plus a summed Gate Out let each step fire a different module or drum voice. Multiple On-The-Fly units can be linked and synced when a single box is not enough.
