Tina Barney: Fashion Reveals the Other Side of a Great American Portraitist

Tina Barney is famous for color portraits of wealthy families at home. Aperture's new book shows the fashion work she made alongside them for magazines, Gucci and Bottega Veneta, starting with her mother, a 1940s cover model.

Tina Barney made her name photographing the rich at home: big, color drenched tableaux of families in their living rooms, where the curtains, the sweaters and the silverware say as much as the faces. It turns out she has been shooting fashion the whole time too. Tina Barney: Fashion, out now from Aperture, is the first book dedicated to that side of her work, and it is one of the best photo books of the fall.

What the book is

Aperture describes it as part memoir and part career survey, and that mix is the point. The book traces how clothes and style run through everything Barney shoots, then lays out nearly four decades of editorial commissions and fashion campaigns, from the late 1980s to now. There is work made on magazine assignments and on set for Gucci and Bottega Veneta.

The plates come with short texts by Barney herself, full of personal stories from behind the scenes, whether that means a stately living room or a magazine shoot. Vince Aletti and Alistair O'Neill also contribute to the book.

It starts with her mother

The opening chapter is the one that makes this more than a portfolio. Barney's mother was a sought-after model in the 1940s who landed a major fashion magazine cover and was photographed by Horst P. Horst and George Hoyningen-Huene, two of the defining fashion photographers of the era. The book pulls from Barney's family history and photo albums to show how growing up around that much glamour and artifice shaped the way she sees.

Once you know that, her famous family pictures look different. The poses, the light, the rooms full of good things: it was always fashion photography, just aimed at real people.

Who Tina Barney is

Barney was born in New York in 1945 and is best known for large-scale color portraits of family and close friends in New York and New England. Her earlier books include The Europeans (2005), Players (2011), Tina Barney: The Beginning (2023) and Family Ties (Aperture, 2024). Her own site, tinabarney.com, is a good place to see how the portraits and the fashion work line up.

See it on the wall

If you are in New York, the book has a companion show. Olney Gleason presents Tina Barney: Fashion from October 24 to November 14, 2026, at 297 Tenth Avenue in Chelsea. On opening day, Saturday, October 24, Barney will be at the gallery in conversation with Vince Aletti, one of the sharpest writers on photography around. Aperture says more details are coming.

Price and where to get it

The book is $65 from the Aperture store, published October 6, 2026 (ISBN 9781597116060). It is also available from other booksellers: check the price here. Aperture's announcement has the full details.

Fashion books are usually either glossy catalogs or theory. This is a rare one that is personal and visual at the same time, from a photographer whose eye has quietly shaped how a whole generation stages a portrait.
