Buchla has opened preorders on Ziggy, a new analog desktop instrument built around the brand's complex oscillator, with shipments now expected to begin in late December 2026. The product page is live with Add to cart, so the wait is on the factory schedule rather than on whether you can reserve one.
Ziggy is Buchla's take on an "unpatched" instrument: modulation is assigned with button holds, switch selection and sliders instead of a nest of patchcords. The goal is quick, gestural sound design in the West Coast style the company helped define, while still playing nicely with keyboards, third-party gear and DAWs over MIDI, USB and 1V/octave CV. Buchla suggests pairing it with its own LEM218 portable keyboard when you want keys under your hands.
Analog heart, digital control
Electronically, the oscillators and low-pass gate stay purely analog. Digital control sits on top so you can save programs, shape modulation and drive a digital effects block with reverbs, delays, distortions and more. Two analog oscillators, wavefolding and shaping, alternate tunings and scale quantization cover everything from strange strings and plucky percussion to leads and deep basses.
The standout modulator is the Cycler, an original source that behaves like a clock, envelope generator, LFO and random generator in one. It can move pitch and timbre or trigger the gate envelopes. An extra-slow LFO, MIDI control, chaotic modulators in the menus and a dedicated modulation oscillator (AM or FM into the complex oscillator, or blended as a second voice) round out the toolkit. Envelope timing on the low-pass gate is dialed as common shapes with time and amount, not a full ADSR stack.
Why shipping moved
Buchla first showed a Ziggy prototype at Superbooth in May and aimed for a fall ship. Public feedback and their own testing pushed a summer circuit rework for signal to noise, build quality, cost and feel. That pass also landed USB audio, MIDI and power on a single USB-C connection, fuller modulation, more preset memory and a browser-based editor for librarian and creative control. Pre-production is wrapping; units leave the factory in late December, then head to shops and customers. The full shipping note lives on the Ziggy product page.
In the studio
The enclosure is oak and steel in classic Buchla style. Patchcord-free layout, USB-C power and comprehensive MIDI make it an easy add to a small studio, with configuration in the onboard menus or through the web app. For the wider catalog, start at buchla.com and the Music Easel lineage that still defines the brand.
Our call
This one is Surfacing. A real Buchla desktop instrument with open preorders and a clear late-December window is rare enough to put on the radar now, especially if West Coast analog is your lane and you would rather reserve than scramble when stock lands. Read the shipping note on the product page before you buy, then watch for shop allocations as December gets closer.
