Twenty years ago, Sofia Coppola put Converse high-tops, pastel macarons and a post-punk soundtrack inside the Palace of Versailles, and plenty of people did not get it. Time has been kind. Marie Antoinette is now a full-on cult object, and MUBI is bringing it back to the big screen in 4K, in US theaters and on MUBI on October 23. The new official trailer just dropped.
What it is
Kirsten Dunst plays Marie Antoinette as a teenager shipped off to marry the awkward young dauphin of France, played by Jason Schwartzman, who is soon crowned Louis XVI. Stuck in a court built on gossip and ritual, she does what bored teenagers do: she throws parties, buys shoes and lives like a rock star, right up until that stops working. The Criterion Collection calls it an anti-biopic, and that is the right word. It is less a history lesson than a mood.
The cast around Dunst is stacked: Judy Davis, Rip Torn as Louis XV, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Steve Coogan, Marianne Faithfull as Empress Maria Theresa, plus early turns from Jamie Dornan and Tom Hardy. Lance Acord shot it, KK Barrett designed it, and Milena Canonero made the costumes, which won her an Oscar.
Why it still hits
The music is the part everyone remembers. Coppola and music producer Brian Reitzell scored eighteenth-century France with New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bow Wow Wow, Gang of Four and The Strokes, alongside a score by Dustin O'Halloran. It should not work. It works so well that the film now feels like the blueprint for a whole strain of moody, music-video period pieces that came after it.
It is also a style reference that never went away. The palette of sugared almond pinks and pistachio greens, the piled hair, the shoes: designers and stylists have been borrowing from this film for two decades. Seeing it again on a cinema screen in 4K is the point of this release.
