The synth that shaped a generation of bass music just got its biggest upgrade in years. Native Instruments has released Massive XL, the latest generation of its flagship software synth, and it is available to download now. It builds on Massive X rather than replacing it, so every Massive X preset and Expansion you own loads straight in.
NI frames the original Massive as the sound behind bass music, electro and dubstep. XL keeps that grit, then adds tools that get you from an idea to a playable patch much faster.
The headline: Preset Generator
This is the feature people will try first. Drop in an audio file and Preset Generator analyzes it, then hands back four fully editable synth presets built from Massive XL's own engine. According to NI's Massive XL FAQ, it works from up to four seconds of audio, runs locally on your computer, and includes stem separation so it can pull a sound out of a busier mix.
A Match and Imagine slider sets how close the results stay to the source. At Match, the engine gets as near as it can. Push toward Imagine and the results drift further. Hit Generate again for a fresh set, or send any result to the Mutator for more variations. NI also says the generator was trained on its own internal data.
Mutator and Randomizer
The two new sound shaping tools split the job cleanly. Mutator changes the building blocks, swapping filter, oscillator or effect types based on other presets in your library. Randomizer leaves the blocks alone and only changes their settings. In both, you can lock the parts you like and change the rest.
What is new in the engine
- Ten oscillator modes that change how wavetables behave
- Hundreds of tables, including original Massive, vintage PPG, acoustic and analog-derived sources, plus drag and drop for your own
- NI's Raum, Replika Shimmer and Tape Wobble effects built in
- Open routing for oscillators, noise, filters, inserts, phase modulation and feedback
- Morpher and Animator for performable movement across presets
- A single oscillator view with detailed wavetable feedback, or the classic two oscillator layout
- Animated modulators, so you can watch every assignment move
- A full edit history you can jump back through
- User banks and saved sub-presets for filters, effects, Performers and Keytrackers
- Polyphonic aftertouch on compatible hardware
The factory library holds 1,000 presets.
System needs and the free Player
Massive XL runs as a plug-in only, with no standalone mode yet. NI lists macOS 14, 15 or 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, with an Apple Silicon chip or an Intel processor with AVX, and 4 GB of RAM with 6 GB recommended. Check the online user guide and the product page for formats and current pricing.
Not ready to commit? The free Massive XL Player plays its included presets and any Massive X Expansions you own, keeps Morpher and Animator, and has a Demo Mode for trying out the full synth. It does not include Mutator or Preset Generator.
Our call
This one is Surfacing. Audio to preset is the right idea at the right time, and keeping it local and editable makes it a real sound design tool rather than a gimmick. Add full Massive X compatibility and a free way to try it, and this is the soft synth update to watch this fall.
