Think of a sleeping bag that unzipped itself into a blanket, and you are close to the Rumpl Original Puffy. It is a quilted, insulated blanket built with the same kind of materials as a puffy jacket, so it shrugs off dirt and damp grass and packs down into a small sack. It is the kind of thing you buy for one camping trip and end up using everywhere.
Who makes it
Rumpl makes blankets for outdoor life, from puffy blankets to sleeping bags, mats and towels. The company says it started in the back of a van, and it calls the Original Puffy the blanket that launched the brand and its original blanket for everywhere. It is still the company's best seller and its most iconic design.
What the Original Puffy is
The Original Puffy is a synthetic insulated blanket designed for outdoor recreation in all its forms. Rumpl says it is designed to be durable, packable and warm. The shell and liner are a ripstop polyester fabric, and the blanket is filled with synthetic insulation that keeps you warm and packs down to save space.
- Shell and liner: ripstop polyester fabric for debris and weather resistance
- Finish: durable water repellent (DWR) finish for stain and weather resistance
- Insulation: synthetic fill that packs down small
- Cape Clip: a snap that lets you wear the blanket like a cape or poncho
- Corner staking loops: pin it down on windy days
- Stuff sack: roll top sack that you can clip on or carry
- Care: machine washable
- Sizes: 1 person and 2 person
Why it is cool
It goes where a normal blanket should not. A cotton or wool throw soaks up damp from grass and sand and collects every leaf. The Original Puffy uses a weather resistant shell, so you can spread it on the ground at a picnic, a beach bonfire or a festival field, then shake it off and pack it away.
The Cape Clip is a smart little detail. Snap it closed around your shoulders and the blanket becomes hands free, wearable warmth, so you can hold a mug or tend a fire while staying wrapped up. On the sidelines of a cold game, it is a lifesaver.
The corner staking loops solve a real problem. Wind loves to lift blankets at the beach and the campsite. Stake the corners and it stays flat.
It packs small and lives in the car. The stuff sack makes it easy to keep in a trunk for tailgates, road trips and impromptu park hangs. Rumpl's tip for packing it is simple: stuff it, do not fold it. Push one corner to the bottom of the sack and keep feeding the blanket in by the handful.
How warm is it
Rumpl does not give its puffy blankets a temperature rating, but it says they should keep you plenty warm in 45 degree weather and above. If you need more, it suggests the 2 person size or layering two blankets. Rumpl also notes the finish makes the blanket highly water and stain resistant, but it is not completely waterproof, so it is not a substitute for a tent floor in the rain.
Care
All Rumpl puffy blankets are machine washable. Rumpl recommends a front loading washing machine on cold with a gentle detergent designed for technical or outdoor gear to help preserve the water repellent finish. Hang it to dry or tumble dry with no heat, and skip machines with an agitator. The blanket is backed by a three year warranty for manufacturing defects in materials or craftsmanship.
Who should buy it
Buy the Original Puffy if you camp, go to outdoor concerts and games, spend time at the beach or simply want a warm blanket that can handle the ground. It also makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves the outdoors.
Look elsewhere if you need a true sleeping system for cold nights. Rumpl's blankets are not temperature rated, so for winter camping a rated sleeping bag is the safer choice.
