Spyderco Delica 4 Lightweight: The Clip Folder That Set the Standard

Spyderco's original Delica arrived in 1990 as one of the first lightweight clip carry folders. The fourth generation keeps the formula: a light fiberglass reinforced nylon handle, a VG-10 blade and a strong back lock.

Some pocket knives are collector pieces. The Spyderco Delica is a tool. It weighs very little, clips into a pocket and opens with the round hole in the blade that has become Spyderco's signature. It has been doing that job for decades, and the current fourth generation is still one of the easiest knives to recommend to someone who wants a dependable everyday folder.

Who makes it

The Delica is made by Spyderco, the knife company known for its distinctive blade hole and its long list of clip folders. Spyderco says that in 1990 its original Delica helped revolutionize pocketknife design as one of the first lightweight, clip carry folders. More than 30 years and four generations later, the brand describes it as one of the most widely recognized knives in the world and a model that still sets the standard for its type.

What the Delica 4 Lightweight is

The Delica 4 Lightweight is the fourth generation of the design. Its handle is injection molded from fiberglass reinforced nylon, often shortened to FRN, which is tough and light. Inside, nested and skeletonized stainless steel liners add structural strength without adding much weight.

The handle surface uses what Spyderco calls Bi-Directional Texture, a pattern designed to give a secure grip in either direction of pull. The knife locks with a sturdy back lock, and the four position pocket clip lets you choose left or right side carry with the tip up or down.

  • Handle: fiberglass reinforced nylon with Bi-Directional Texture
  • Liners: nested, skeletonized stainless steel
  • Blade steel: VG-10 stainless steel
  • Grind: saber grind
  • Lock: back lock
  • Clip: four position, left or right, tip up or tip down
  • Edges: PlainEdge, CombinationEdge or SpyderEdge

Choosing an edge

Spyderco offers the black handled Delica 4 Lightweight with a satin blade in three edge styles. PlainEdge is a straight edge from heel to tip. It is the easiest to sharpen and the most versatile for push cuts like whittling or opening packages. CombinationEdge is partially serrated, with serrations near the handle and a plain section toward the tip. SpyderEdge is fully serrated, which bites aggressively into rope, cord and fibrous material.

For most people a PlainEdge is the best first choice, since it handles everyday cutting well and is simple to maintain. Spyderco also makes a CombinationEdge version with a foliage green handle and an all black version with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) blade coating and black hardware.

Why it is cool

The Delica gets the basics right. The blade hole lets you open it with one thumb, even with gloves. The back lock is a proven, simple mechanism. The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle keeps weight low, so the knife disappears in a pocket until you need it. VG-10 is a well known stainless steel that holds a good edge and resists corrosion, which matters in a knife that lives in a pocket every day.

The four position clip is another quiet strength. Left handed users often struggle with knives that only carry one way. The Delica lets you set it up for your hand and your preferred carry, which is why it works for so many different people.

How to care for it

Keep the blade clean and dry. Wipe it after cutting food, tape or anything sticky, and rinse out the handle with warm water if grit gets inside, then dry it fully. A drop of light oil at the pivot keeps the action smooth. Touch up the edge regularly with a fine sharpener rather than waiting until it is very dull. Serrated edges need a tapered rod to sharpen each scallop.

Who should buy it

Buy the Delica 4 Lightweight if you want a reliable, light everyday folder with a proven lock and good steel. It is a strong first quality knife and a sensible upgrade from a basic hardware store blade.

Skip it if you want a heavy metal handle, a flipper opening or a large blade for hard outdoor work. It is built to be light and practical first. Always check your local knife laws before you buy and carry.
